Move like a baby

LU - blog headerv9

Babies are adorable.  We are enchanted watching them develop and take note of each new movement, the rolling over, the lifting of their legs and arms like a swan dive. Then comes sitting up, creeping, crawling and finally….

baby play jigsawTa da!  Standing up!

That’s what we’ve all been waiting for, right?  Where all of this practice and exploration has been leading?

Of course, after this vertical achievement, kids still spend lots of time on the floor, playing games, looking at nature up close.  Wriggling around for fun.

Then as we grow up, we leave all of that behind.

But should we?

Is it possible that we might want to re-visit these movements and see what benefits they have for us as adults? After all, this deep exploration that little people do with their arms and hands, belly, legs and feet, serve an amazing acquisition of core strength, balance and stability.  And with what joy!

In this little video, I explore some of the teachings that babies have for us.

Thank you Caryl Beth. I like the reminders as well. It’s easy to get overly serious and forget the easy inherent strengths and qualities that we come with. How cool that you use movement in this way with your students. My curiosity is piqued!

I just loved this video! Thank you SO much for these wonderful reminders and images. I love self-exploration in this way. In my teaching of music therapy students in a class on the use of voice as a therapeutic tool, I always have them go through a developmental sequence of movement and sounding. So powerful and fun too – well most of the time – its also very intense for some folks and some are pretty resistant. Anyway, thanks again.
